Iconic Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat Exempt from Asian Games Selection Trials

Two of India’s most decorated wrestlers, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, have been exempted from the selection trials for the 2023 Asian Games. The decision was made by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ad-hoc committee, which is currently in charge of managing the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Punia and Phogat are both considered to be “iconic players” under the WFI’s selection policy, which means that they are eligible for an exemption from trials. This is due to their past achievements, which include winning medals at the World Championships and the Olympics.

The decision to exempt Punia and Phogat has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have argued that it is justified, given their status as two of India’s best wrestlers. Others have said that it is unfair to other wrestlers who will have to compete in the trials.

The IOA ad-hoc committee has said that the decision to exempt Punia and Phogat was made after “careful consideration.” They have also said that the two wrestlers will still have to undergo fitness tests before being selected for the Asian Games team.

The Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 10 to 25, 2023. Wrestling is one of the most popular sports at the Asian Games, and India is always a strong contender for medals.

With Punia and Phogat in the team, India will be hoping to win multiple medals in wrestling at the 2023 Asian Games.
