Sindhu, Sen Cruise Into Canada Open Quarterfinals

PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen continued their fine form at the Canada Open Super 500 tournament on Thursday, both advancing to the quarterfinals.

Sindhu, the reigning Olympic silver medalist, received a walkover in the second round after her opponent, Natsuki Nidaira of Japan, withdrew due to an injury. The Indian star will now face Gao Fang Jie of China in the quarterfinals.

Sen, the world number 9, had a more challenging match, but he eventually prevailed 21-15, 21-11 against Brazil’s Ygor Coelho. The Indian youngster will take on Belgium’s Julien Carraggi in the quarterfinals.

The other Indian players in action on Thursday were Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala and Krishna Prasad Garaga, who lost their men’s doubles second round match to Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.

Sindhu and Sen are both looking to build on their recent performances, which have seen them reach the finals of the Indonesia Masters and the semifinals of the Malaysia Open. A strong showing at the Canada Open would be a major boost for their hopes of qualifying for the World Championships later this year.
