Suspect in Georgia Killings Killed in Shootout with Police, 3 Officers Wounded

A man wanted in the killings of four people in Georgia was shot and killed by police on Sunday, July 17, 2023. The suspect, identified as Andre Longmore, 40, was killed in a shootout with police in Jonesboro, about 15 miles north of Hampton, where the shootings took place.

Longmore was wanted in the deaths of four people in the Hampton subdivision of Dogwood Lakes. The victims were identified as Scott Leavitt, 67, his wife Shirley Leavitt, 66, Steve Blizzard, 65, and Ronald Jeffers, 66. All four victims were shot within a 10-minute span on Saturday morning.

A massive manhunt was underway for Longmore after the shootings. On Sunday, police received a tip that Longmore was in the Jonesboro area. When officers went to the location, Longmore opened fire on them. The officers returned fire, killing Longmore.

Three officers were injured in the shootout. A Henry County sheriff’s deputy and a Clayton County police officer were both shot and taken to the hospital. They are expected to recover. A third officer was injured when he fell during the shootout.

The motive for the killings is still under investigation. However, police said that Longmore was known to the victims and that the shootings were not random.
